  • After my breast augmentation surgery, when will the swelling go down?

Swelling is unavoidable after surgery. The amount of swelling can vary based on many factors. If you have a very tight and developed pec muscle, if you overdo it, overuse one arm, or if you don't limit your activity your first two weeks post op, your risk of swelling greatly increases. The most important way to minimize swelling is to restrict your activity per Dr. Feldman’s instructions and wear the garments provided. Swelling significantly more on one side than the other is a clear indication of overdoing it. Overdoing it increases your risk of bleeding, bruising, capsular contracture, and implant malposition. Swelling typically peaks 48-72 hours after surgery, around the time of your post-op appointment, and slowly resolves over the next 8-12 weeks. Overuse will increase both, the amount, and duration of swelling as well as discomfort. As the swelling resolves, the upper part of your breast will appear prettier, softer and more natural. This is the fluffing portion of what woman refer to as the “dropping and fluffing” that occurs approximately 8-12 weeks after surgery.

  • How long does swelling last after a tummy tuck?

Swelling is unavoidable after tummy tuck surgery, and the amount of swelling can vary from one patient to another based on many factors. the more it will swell. However, the most important way to minimize swelling is to restrict activity per Dr. Bancroft’s instructions. Swelling typically peaks between 48 to 72 hours after surgery, around the time of your post-op appointment, and slowly resolves over 8 to 12 weeks. Overuse will increase both the amount and duration of the swelling as well as the discomfort. Ice packs in the first few days after surgery can help control swelling as long as it’s through a towel, on top of the binder with no direct skin contact to prevent frostbite.

  • Is it normal for one breast to swell more than the other after surgery?

It is normal for there to be a slight swelling difference, from one side to the other. Often times this occurs on the hand/arm you use more, indicating overuse. It’s also important to remember breasts are cousins not twins, and they will always have a slightly different size and appearance. However, it is never normal to have a significant difference swelling in combination with bruising, increasing pain, redness, or fever. If one breast swells significantly more than the other (one will literally touch your chin) that is a concern and could be an indication of a problem such as hematoma. Should that develop please contact the office ASAP for evaluation

  • Is it normal to have swelling after BOTOX®?

Mild redness and small raised bumps are expected immediately after a BOTOX® treatment. This will resolve in as little as a few minutes to an hour after injection. If you notice swelling that is significant or has increased after receiving your treatment, and leaving the office please contact our office at 281.313.0540 or email gabby@bfprs.com.

  • What do you recommend to help with swelling after tummy tuck surgery?

Swelling is unavoidable after surgery, and the amount of swelling can vary from one patient to another based on many factors. You will have at least two drains left in place for a couple days post surgery to reduce extra fluid accumulation and thus minimize some of the swelling. You will also be placed in a surgical binder. Both of the above will help lessen the swelling, but not completely prevent it. A tummy tuck is a major surgical procedure and, again, swelling is a normal body reaction to being cut.

  • When does the swelling go down after liposuction?

Most liposuction patients can see a very real improvement as early as the first week, and this continues to improve over the next several months as the swelling recedes and the skin adapts and contracts into its new shape. This of course varies depending on the patient's initial body type. More overweight patients will see a change in their shape faster while a very thin person who is only getting a small area liposuctioned will not see the change as quickly. For the first week the initial swelling can even make the treated area look larger than it was before.

  • Will my breast size decrease as the swelling goes down?

As the swelling resolves the upper part of your breast will appear prettier, softer and more natural. This is the fluffing portion of what woman refer to as the “dropping and fluffing” that occurs 8-12 weeks after surgery. This is why at the post-op appointment and 2 week follow up, breasts often appear extra full at the top, particularly from the side view.
