Fighting Seasonal Affective Disorder with Vitamin B12

The last part of December through January is the darkest part of the year for the northern hemisphere. In many parts of America people avoid going outdoors because the weather is so unpleasant. Instead they curl up on the sofa, eat, binge watch Netflix and feel down. Coping this way for a few days is fine, but many people suffer from SAD - Seasonal...

How to Choose a Plastic Surgeon

If you are considering making improvements to your body through plastic surgery, you probably have spent a lot of time thinking about the kinds of improvements you'd like to make. Will I Be Able To Exercise after My Breast Augmentation?

Many active women who choose breast augmentation and subsequently love the way their new breasts and figure look, worry that breast implants will affect their athletic or work performance and ability to exercise.

“This should not be a major concern,” says Dr. Evan M. Feldman, board certified plastic surgeon, who specializes in breast enhancement. “While we encourage all of our patients to discuss their lifestyles and goals with us so that we can advise them about what surgical options and sizes are best for them, long-term breast augmentation doesn’t conflict with exercise, work or living a healthy, active life. I have operated on elite athletes, rock climbers, fitness competitors, ironman triathletes, volleyball and tennis players, and they all report getting back to their pre-surgery performance levels, but it does take time.” These elite athletes report about a year before feeling as strong as they did prior to surgery, but most people will easily return to their daily activities within a few weeks after surgery.

What Is the Difference between Membership in a Society, Association, Academy, and Accreditation/Certification?

The ABPS Diplomate is a certified physician who has met the requirements outlined above. The mission of The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. is to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification and maintenance of certification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialties.

Societies are professional membership associations. The specific society, association or academy should be contacted for specific membership requirements and mission.

Why Is the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. Different from Other Plastic Surgery (or Cosmetic Surgery) Boards?

ABPS is the only Plastic Surgery board that is one of the 24 specialty boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). It is the only ABMS board which certifies in the specialty of plastic surgery. That is, plastic and reconstructive surgery of the head and neck, trunk and extremities. "Cosmetic Surgery" is not a recognized specialty of the American Board of Medical Specialties, and is a way for non-plastic surgeons (i.e. family doctors, dermatologists, ER doctors, oral surgeons, podiatrists) to attempt to legitamize themselves in the eyes of the public who may not know better.

Why should I choose a doctor who is Board Certified by ABPS?

By choosing a plastic surgeon who is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc., you can be assured that the doctor has graduated from an accredited medical school and has completed at least five years of additional training as a resident surgeon in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Medical Education or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This includes a minimum of five years of residency training in all areas of surgery, including at least two years devoted entirely to plastic surgery. Certification is a voluntary process a surgeon seeks after this training. To become certified, the doctor then must pass comprehensive written and oral exams. We suggest you visit the link on our home page to American Board of Medical Specialties website (www.abms.org) and click on “Is Your Doctor Board Certified” to check whether a doctor is board certified by any of the 24 ABMS Boards.

Bancroft Feldman Plastic Surgery Patient Wins Fitness Competition!

Sonia is a mother of two who both lives and works in Sugar Land.  In March 2012, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.  She went to the MD Anderson Regional Care Center in Sugar Land for treatment, and in June 2012, she underwent a double mastectomy and lymph node removal, with immediate reconstruction performed by Dr. Feldman.

This June she will be able to celebrate the one year anniversary of her breast cancer survival with an actual award:  On May 18, Sonia entered the Musclemania Natural fitness competition, held at the Moody Gardens Resort & Spa in Galveston.  She won second place in her age category (35 and over) and fifth place overall.

Dr. Feldman and the entire staff of Bancroft Feldman Plastic Surgery are so proud of Sonia and her amazing accomplishment. She is an inspiration to both us and our patients. Congratulations!

Dr. Feldman's RealSelf Post: Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation Without Lift? (photo)

Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation Without Lift? (photo)

Question:

Augmentation only possible ? Or would I require a lift also My main concern is lack of volume in the upper part of the breast and the asymmetry. My left breast has bad a breast reduction 6 years ago for asymmetry, my right was then had lipo 2 years after that to remove fat after the breast became noticeably bigger than the left. I have continually been losing weight over the past 6 years but I am now maintaining.

Dr. Feldman's Answer:

Do I need a breast lift (mastopexy) or not?

This is probably the most common question asked by my cosmetic breast patients with any droopiness or ptosis of their breasts. There is no absolute or correct answer. It depends on your (the patient's) expectations and desires. Just remember the implant needs to be centered directly behind the nipple, so wherever your breasts/nipple sit currently this is approximately where you can expect the implant to be positioned/settle. Breast implants alone simply add volume to your breasts. They do not lift or shape your breasts. If you are happy with the look of your breasts and just want them to be a bit fuller then a breast augmentation alone may work.
